Skyhunter by Marie Lu

In a world broken by war, a team of young warriors is willing to sacrifice everything to save what they love.
The Karensa Federation has conquered a dozen countries, leaving Mara as one of the last free nations in the world. Refugees flee to its borders to escape a fate worse than death—transformation into mutant war beasts known as Ghosts, creatures the Federation then sends to attack Mara.
The legendary Strikers, Mara's elite fighting force, are trained to stop them. But as the number of Ghosts grows and Karensa closes in, defeat seems inevitable.
Still, one Striker refuses to give up hope.
Robbed of her voice and home, Talin Kanami knows firsthand the brutality of the Federation. Their cruelty forced her and her mother to seek asylum in a country that considers their people repugnant. She finds comfort only with a handful of fellow Strikers who have pledged their lives to one another and who are determined to push Karensa back at all costs.
When a mysterious prisoner is brought from the front, Talin senses there’s more to him than meets the eye. Is he a spy from the Federation? Or could he be the weapon that will save them all?

All the Marie Lu books I've read lived up to high expectations, Skyhunter didn't disappoint. Marie Lu usually writes fantasy and sci-fi books, and I'll admit that before I read her first books, I wasn't particularly interested in that genre. It's amazing how one would do anything to protect their home and despite Talin will do just that. Even despite all those saying she can't, Talin continually proved them wrong. The plot of the story evolved over time and the readers get to understand Talin more and more. I remember being so annoyed in the beginning because everyone kept treating Talin like a traitor just because of her home. It's really amazing how Marie Lu can make a science fiction story and make it so lively and realistic.
I especially loved how much Talin's mother supported her in every decision she made. Her mother was always there to back her up. Overall, Skyhunter was an amazing novel and it really made the reader think about how war really affects everyone. How much Talin would sacrifice and give up for a place that shuns her out is redefines loyalty to a whole new level.
I would recommend this book to people who enjoy sci-fi and since this book has a sequel, I would definitely recommend you check it out if you enjoyed this one. Marie Lu spun a fantastic story base on loyalty, bravery, and family. Skyhunter will definitely be worth reading.
